Tennessee Wesleyan University is organizing a community town-hall in Athens on Tuesday, March 26 at 7 p.m. in Townsend Auditorium, focusing on the Civil Rights Movement. Dr. Chris Schutz and Cliff Couch will moderate a panel featuring four McMinn County residents who will share their personal experiences. Panelists include Anne Boyd, Robert McCowan Jr., Ray Johnson, and Dr. Vant Hardaway, each with unique perspectives on civil rights in the area. Anne Boyd is the current president of the local NAACP chapter and the first African American student to attend Etowah City Elementary School. Robert McCowan Jr. is a retired officer and one of the first African American law enforcement officers in Athens. Ray Johnson is a lifelong McMinn County resident and was part of the last graduating class from J.L. Cook School. Dr. Vant Hardaway, a retired educator, was part of the 1967 MCHS graduating class, the first full class after desegregation in the McMinn County school system. The event is free to attend and open to all community members, offering an opportunity for meaningful dialogue and reflection.
