Friendly City Festivals will kick off the 14th Annual Sounds of Summer Concert Series on Friday, June 9, with The Dexter Thomas Band.

The Dexter Thomas Band is a crowd favorite in the southeast and is known for playing the best of ‘60s and ‘70s rock, R&B and funk.

A news release stated, “Be sure to bring your beach chair, blanket, family members and friends to 106 S. Jackson Street/Market Park Pavilion in Downtown Athens at 7 p.m. for a great night of entertainment.”

Sounds of Summer was started by local musician Tim Hughes with a simple purpose — to provide free live music in Athens’ historic downtown creating a community party. This year, the concerts have moved to Friday nights at 7 p.m. and the remaining lineup is:

• June 30 — Kinslee Melhorn

• July 7 — Run Katie Run

• July 14 — Fresh Mind

• July 21 — Monday Night Social
