Fox, Dominion reach $787M settlement over election claims

Fox and Dominion Voting Systems have reached a $787 million settlement in the voting machine company’s defamation lawsuit. The agreement averts a trial in a case that exposed how the top-rated network chased viewers by promoting lies about the 2020 presidential election. Dominion lawyer Justin Nelson said the deal shows that truth matters and lies have consequences. Dominion had asked for $1.6 billion in arguing that Fox had damaged its reputation by helping peddle phony conspiracy theories about its equipment switching votes from former President Donald Trump to Democrat Joe Biden.

Can a doorbell ring justify a 'stand your ground' shooting?

A Missouri law allowing people to defend themselves in their homes could come into play in the shooting of a Black 16-year-old in Kansas City. Ralph Yarl was shot by an 84-year-old white man after he rang the doorbell at the wrong house while attempting to pick up his younger siblings. Andrew Lester has been charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action. He told police he was “scared to death” and thought someone was trying to break into his home. Missouri's “castle doctrine” allows deadly force when someone “attempts to unlawfully enter” a home. But legal experts say that's a questionable assertion in this case.

Tennessee moves to shield gun firms after school shooting

In the wake of a deadly school shooting last month, Republican lawmakers in Tennessee are sending to Republican Gov. Bill Lee a proposal that further protects gun and ammunition dealers, manufacturers and sellers against lawsuits. The Senate's passage comes amid pushback from Democrats saying lawmakers are trying to shield gun companies just weeks following the Nashville school shooting that killed six people, including three 9-year-olds. The final vote came as Lee’s administration was still trying to drum up enough support among lawmakers in his party to pass legislation to keep firearms away from people who could harm themselves or others.

The City of Athens Police Department has announced the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 22 from

10 am to 2 pm at the Athens Police Department. This is a drive-thru

event where a police officer will come out to the vehicle and collect

the medications without the driver having to leave the vehicle. The

City of Athens Police Department has partnered with the Drug Enforcement Administration to host this event. DEA and its partners

will collect tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription drugs. For more than a decade, the event has helped Americans easily rid their homes of unneeded medications- those that are

old, unwanted, or expired- that too often become a gateway to addiction. Take Back Day offers free and anonymous disposal of unneeded

medications at more than 4,000 drop off locations nationwide. In

partnership with local law enforcement, Take Back Day has removed

more than 8,300 tons of medication from circulation since its inception. Collection sites will not accept syringes, sharps, and illicit

drugs. Liquid products, such as cough syrup, should remain sealed in

their original container. The cap must be tightly sealed to prevent
