Etowah to receive half a million dollar TDOT grant

The City of Etowah was awarded a $578,000 grant from the Tennessee Department of Transportation to work on the historic L& N Depot.

During Monday night’s regular city commission meeting, Etowah City Manager Russ Blair informed the commission during the city manager report portion of the meeting that the city will receive the money.

“We were awarded a grant from TDOT for $578,000 to repaint the depot, work on the roof and to do a lighting project there,” Blair said. “We do have a 20% match on that ... This work has to be completed over the course of three years, so we have some time to plan and budget for that.”

According to Blair, the depot was last painted in 2012 and is in “dire need” of an update.

“The roof is going on 120 years old ... With access to this kind of money I feel it’s time that we seriously look at what it is going to take to get us another 100 years out of it,” he expressed.

The city also received another nearly $200,000 grant to aid with work on pedestrian crossings.

“Also, the last month or so we had received a traffic signal grant of $170,000 with no match to update the 8th Street intersection pedestrian crossings,” Blair said.

He noted that he had been informed by TDOT that they would be reaching out to the city over the next couple of weeks with the intention of discussing the pedestrian crossing grant
