This year’s Juneteenth Celebration will be kicking off this weekend with two days of events starting Friday evening.

The opening event will start Friday, June 16 in the evening at 6 p.m. at the Tennessee Wesleyan University Townsend Auditorium and the second event will take place the following day on Saturday, June 17 at the Market Park Pavilion starting at 3 p.m.

“I am really excited,” said Tyson King, the president of the Valor Guild, which leads the celebration. “It seems like this event continues to get better each year and I’m excited for all of the work that we have put into this event. I can’t wait to see all of the people come out to celebrate and enjoy these events.”

The event on Friday at TWU will feature a returning guest speaker who was present during last year’s festivities.

“Friday night will feature the renowned speaker, Clifton Taulbert. He is an author, businessman, entrepreneur, banker and a great speaker, so we are really excited that he decided to come back and celebrate Juneteenth with us again this year,” King said. “Saturday will be a big celebration at the pavilion. We will have the president of Cleveland State Community College and we are excited to hear her message on Saturday.”

Both events are open and free to the public. Saturday will also have food and drinks available to the public.

“This event has been fun over the past three years,” King noted. “The first year that we did this had minimal planning but it went really well and it was just a one day event. Last year we had it as a two day event and this year will also be a two day event, but we hope to see it continue to grow.”

King encouraged everyone to participate in one or both events for both celebration and education.

“If you come out to these events you will learn about the history of Juneteenth and the importance of why we celebrate it,” King expressed. “Our celebration is to recognize the hardships the African American enslaved people went through just to see that one day in June 1865 when Gen. Gordon Granger came in and announced that they were free and that is what we celebrate. We still have a long way to go but we can celebrate growth. If everybody comes out and if everybody becomes educated on this topic then we can all understand what this means. I don’t want people to not celebrate because they don’t understand what this is so please, everyone come on out and support this and we will continue to see it grow and grow.”
