Pulitzer Prizes in journalism awarded to The New York Times, The Washington Post, AP and others

The New York Times and The Washington Post were awarded three Pulitzer Prizes apiece for work in 2023 that dealt with everything from the war in Gaza to gun violence, and The Associated Press won in the feature photography category for coverage of global migration to the U.S.

In the New York Times today, Amy Qin and Patricia Mazzei reported on the new Florida law that prohibits many Chinese citizens from buying property in Florida, especially near important infrastructure like airports, refineries, and military installations. Qin and Mazzei note that more than three dozen states either have enacted or are crafting laws to restrict the purchase of land, businesses, or housing by Chinese nationals, even if they have legal residence in the United States. The justification for the laws is that Chinese investment in the U.S. is a national security risk, although Chinese nationals own less than 400,000 acres in the United States.

Governor Bill Lee has signed a bill into law, also known as the Protecting Children from Social Media Act, which mandates social media companies to authenticate the age of their users and require minors to obtain parental approval. According to the law, individuals under 18 must have parental or guardian consent to register for a social media profile. For existing accounts held by minors, companies must verify parental consent, failing which access will be denied. Furthermore, platforms must offer parents means to monitor these accounts. Non-compliance exposes companies to potential lawsuits by the Tennessee attorney general.
