State News:

If you happen to spot a turkey in Tennessee this summer, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency wants you to tell them about it. The TWRA invites everyone to participate in its wild turkey summer observational survey. Open to the public from June 1st through August 31st, this survey has been conducted annually by agency staff and cooperators since the 1980s and was made accessible to the public in 2022. Participants can assist the TWRA in monitoring the state's wild turkey population by reporting sightings. In the 2023 summer survey, 158 TWRA staff members and 742 public observers submitted 2,664 wild turkey observations from 93 of the state's 95 counties. The 2023 results estimated an average of 2.1 poults per hen, below the five-year average of 2.5 poults per hen, with West Tennessee showing higher production than East Tennessee. All observations recorded by TWRA staff and volunteers during the three-month survey will be documented by county and summarized both regionally and statewide.
