Treasury's Yellen says US could default on its debt as soon as June 1

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has notified Congress that the U.S. could default on its debt as early as June 1, if legislators do not raise or suspend the nation’s borrowing authority before then and avert what could potentially become a global financial crisis. In a letter Monday to House and Senate leaders, Yellen urged congressional leaders “to protect the full faith and credit of the United States by acting as soon as possible” to address the $31.4 trillion limit on its legal borrowing authority. She added that it is impossible to predict with certainty the exact date of when the U.S. will run out of cash.

Athens Area Council for the Arts announces registration is

open for a variety of summer arts programs for all grades. Unless

otherwise noted, all events take place at The Arts Center, 320

North White Street, in Athens. Registration for all camps is available online at athensartscouncil.org/camps/ You may also register in-person at The Arts Center at 320 N White Street, Athens,

or by phone at 423-745-8781. Staff is available to answer questions during office hours, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10 am to 5 pm.

 The McMinn County Board of Education will meet in Regular

Session on Tuesday, May 9th at 5:30 pm at the McMinn County

Center for Educational Excellence. There will be a board Work

Session prior to the Regular Session Meeting at 4:45 pm
