My Take:
It takes awhile for court cases to work their way through the system but the results are coming in now, two that stood out for me this week is the court case in North Carolina:
Incumbent Justice Allison Riggs stated: “After millions of dollars spent, more than 68,000 voters at risk of losing their votes, thousands of volunteers mobilized, hundreds of legal documents filed, and immeasurable damage done to our democracy, I’m glad the will of the voters was finally heard, six months and two days after Election Day,” she said. “It’s been my honor to lead this fight — even though it should never have happened — and I’m in awe of the North Carolinians whose courage reminds us all that we can use our voices to hold accountable any politician who seeks to take power out of the hands of the people.”
The other was the Alabama redistricting case: In a scathing ruling, a panel of three federal judges Thursday struck down Alabama’s 2023 congressional map as a violation of both the Voting Rights Act (VRA) and the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
The judges — two of whom were appointed by President Donald Trump — excoriated the state for what they called “a deliberate decision to double down on the dilution of Black Alabamians’ votes.“
The unanimous decision strikes a blow for fair representation for Black voters in the state, and could lead to new restrictions on how Alabama makes future changes to its map.
Our courts continue to hold both the republicans and the Trump regime accountable for their actions. To me, these are signs of hope that both the courts and people are fighting back.
