The thing I find most interesting about the Swan House is the close connection to Athens. Most everyone is familiar with the Van Dyke Mansion (c. 1833), sitting on the hill behind Eastside Shopping Center on South White Street in Athens, and now owned and restored by one of our guild members, Lisa Long. Oneof Mr. and Mrs. Van Dyke’s daughters, Margaret Josephine, married Hugh T. Inman of Dandridge, TN,and they were the parents of Edward Inman, builder of the Swan House in 1928.

After the civil war, the Inmans moved to Atlanta and accumulated wealth from cotton brokerage and investments in transportation, banking and real estate, and were considered one of the wealthiest families in Atlanta in the early part of the twentieth century.

After their house in Ansley Park burned in 1924, the Inmans commissioned Phillip Trammell Shutze of the Atlanta architectural firm of Hentz, Reid and Adler to design a new house on 28 acres in Buckhead, a northern Atlanta community. Mr. Shutze, considered one of America’s foremost Classical architects of the 20th Century, was a graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology, Columbia School of Architecture, and the American Academy in Rome, Italy. He combined Renaissance revival styles with a Classical approach on the main facade and a less formal rear facade.

The home is sited at the top of a small hill with terraced gardens and a fountain cascading down the hillside. There is a recurring motif of sculpted or painted swans throughout the house and grounds.

On February 22, 2019, the Atlanta History Center opened Cyclorama: The Big Picture, featuring the fully restored cyclorama painting, The Battle of Atlanta. Having been moved in 2018 from its former home in Grant Park, the centerpiece of this multi-media experience is an almost 140-year-old hand-painted work of art that stands 49 feet tall, is longer than a football field, and weighs 10,000 pounds. (To learn more about these sites before we visit, google Atlanta History Center, Atlanta Swan House, and Atlanta Cyclorama.)

We should be back home between 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM, depending on the traffic getting out of Atlanta.

We hope you and your friends can join us for this fun and exciting day!

Friendly City Festivals will kick off the 15th annual Sounds of Summer Concert series on Friday, June 14th with Dirk Quinn Band. Based in Philadelphia, PA, Dirk Quinn Band is a four-piece high energy jazz/ funk band that travels extensively throughout the US/Canada. As stated in Raleigh Music Listings -"This Philly based band must be the standard bearers of the funk scene up in the City of Brotherly Love...they have a great blend of Dirk's guitar, drum keys and horns that make this a funky jazz journey into the unknown." "Fleet-fingered Philadelphia-based guitarist Dirk Quinn could be the illegitimate son of Jeff Beck, although his fiery electric work is firmly rooted in jazz and, in the context of his band, it's allayed with insistent, funky grooves to create a brilliantly lave-laden form of electric fusion. To put it another way, this guy is smokin'" writes Connect Savannah. You can follow Dirk Quinn Band on most social platforms and stream their music on all streaming sources.
