Extremist Republicans today shut down House business by refusing to pass a procedural vote to take up a spending bill, as they had threatened to do in retaliation for the passage yesterday of the continuing resolution to fund the government into the new year. This is the fourth time the extremists have defeated special rules in the House this year, and as deputy chief of staff for Representative Don Beyer (D-VA) Aaron Fritschner pointed out, their doing so is highly unusual. In the previous 20 years the House voted down no such measures at all.

The McMinn County Library Board's Director Search Committee will be conducting interviews with applicants for the position of E.G. Fisher Public Library director on Monday November 20th from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. The interviews are open to the public, but there will not be a public comment portion during the meeting. The interviews will be conducted in the community room at the Fisher library.

“Old-Fashioned Downtown Christmas” is TOMORROW, Friday, November 17th from 5pm - 8pm in Downtown Athens. It is the annual kickoff to the holiday season for Athens downtown businesses. There will be Vendors (craft, food, service organizations) and everyone is invited to come and enjoy a great evening of family-fun!
