I went to see “Ain’t Misbehavin” yesterday afternoon and I wanted to give you my impressions of it:

OH MY GOD! So much intertainment in a two hours show. First of all, I would not even have seen this but my friends had a friend who was in the play so I went just to spend some time with my friends, because I enjoy their company. Yesterday was a cold, wintery, cloudy, day. I trudged into the building half heartedly hoping I would enjoy the musical. Little did I know I would be transported back to the 1920’s in a speakeasy watching and listening to group of people that had me tapping my toes, singing along with them, and enjoying every minute of their performance.

First of all, the women! They were so comfortable with their sexuality that it showed in both their movments, singing, and flirting with the audience. I never knew lifting a skirt just a little would make me break out into a sweat! They were so comfortable expressing themselves and having fun at the same time. I have been in the theater for many years and I know it takes a lot of work to look that comfortable on stage and to hold that character for the whole play.

Then the choreography! The dancing was so sensual and natural, I was so jealous they felt that comfortable in their own skin to show that to us. There is a term called “blocking” it is the movement on the stage, where everyone moves around during the play and it has to be worked out so that everyone is not bumping into everyone else. The stage was small but the movements were so natural, the director needs to be complemented again and again in directing both the movement and bringing out the characters in the singers.

I have watched a lot of things Josh Bragg has done in the theater and I wanted to tell him the one song he did called “Viper” about smoking pot got me high after he sang that song, it brought back so many memories of me getting high in my youth.

But the backbone of the whole play was the piano player! WOW! He played the HELL out of that piano! I swear, at times I thought I saw smoke coming out of the top of it. Without the music to complement and support the singers the play would have been nice, but not outstanding like it was. Can’t say enough good things about his playing, and when he got his spotlight shot, it was such a nice surprise, we all wanted to watch him play and play and he had his back to the audience the whole time, so when he got his much deserved spotlight we all cheered.

It was such a delight to be literally teleported back in time to watch these singers and dancers relive that era with such pride and grace, it was truly entertaining. Thank you.
